Mindfulness is being more present and aware. It is prescribed by many self-help gurus, doctors, and writers as a tool anyone can use to improve their mental health and wellness. At the same time it can be used like a scalpel to deal with more acute problems.
In this post, we will look at how mindfulness can be leveraged and used to tackle specific emotions that arise.
Turning Towards Emotions
When we experience negative emotions, we react either by trying to ‘fight them’ or by suppressing them. As a result, this can lead to you becoming more stressed or upset as your emotions intensify.
Mindfulness teaches us to turn towards our emotions. What this means, is listen to the thoughts and feelings you’re experiencing, and then simply acknowledge them.
“When you react, you let others control you. When you respond, you are in control.” ― Bohdi Sanders, Martial Arts Wisdom Click To TweetNow when you say ‘I am stressed’, ‘I am embarrassed’ or ‘I am upset’. Don’t be ashamed or embarrassed by these emotions, instead, simply acknowledge that they exist.
Our Emotions Can Get the Best of Us
People get upset sometimes. People become angry sometimes. But if you’re aware of your condition, then you can better understand that the thoughts you’re currently thinking aren’t completely objective.
Understand that your current emotions aren’t permanent. In other words, you’re feeling angry right now, and as such your thoughts shouldn’t be taken too seriously. Allow yourself time to breathe and decompress. Breathing is calming and very soothing. In a few hours, you will likely feel much better.
“Whatever thought that activates a negative mood in your life, absolutely doesn't deserve a single moment in your mind.” ― Edmond Mbiaka
Debriefing
Being aware and accepting of your emotions will help you to assess what triggered them and how you dealt with them. For instance, the more you break down and intellectualize your emotions, the more you will understand how to maintain control over them.
